Getting into the 'MythTV Setup'

Use these steps to return to the MythTV Setup menu. You can use this if you are having trouble getting your video cards set up or if you are having trouble getting the guide to work and some things like that. I initially had my box set up and working but no guide. As it turns out, I couldn't find where to sign up for the Data Direct service. I could've just gone back in through this way and entered the info for Data Direct once I had it.

Follow these steps to get back into the MythTV Setup menu.

  1. Press 'Esc' on your keyboard or the 'go back' button on your remote repeatedly until you're asked if you really want to exit MythTV. Select 'Yes'.
  2. Hold down 'Alt' and hit '2' to stop the backend.
  3. Hold down 'Alt' and hit 'S'. The mythtv-setup GUI should come up.
  4. After you are done making changes in mythtv-setup hold down 'Alt' and hit '3' to restart the backend.
  5. Hold down 'Alt' and hit 'M'. The mythtv frontend GUI should come back up.

Alternatively, if you have a network connection working, the computer set up to display on TV Out, and no keyboard or mouse, here's an alternative way:

  1. ssh into the machine using your user account
  2. "sudo su -" to switch to the root user
  3. type "export DISPLAY=:0" this will cause the mythtv-setup GUI to appear on the screen where the frontend GUI is normally seen. You can use other values to send the display to an X server on another workstation.
  4. type "/etc/init.d/mythtv-backend stop" to stop the backend server
  5. type "mythtv-setup" to run the low level config utility
  6. type "/etc/init.d/mythtv-backend start" to restart the backend server

If you set mythtv-setup to display to TV Out, and you can't select certain setup options due to the lack of a keyboard, you can set up remote VNC access using x11vncHowTo.

Good luck, I hope this helps!
