This is meant to be done right after you install but can be used even with things in your storage partition if you have someplace to store it.

The switch to one of the more robust file systems will vastly improve the speed of live-TV channel changing, and the general response time of your storage partition along with providing a rich new feature set.

To begin ssh or open a root terminal on the target machine. First, stop myth and tar up your storage and cache partitions.

1. /etc/init.d/mythtv-backend stop
2. tar cvvpPf /tmp/myth.tar /myth

and if using mythtv 0.18 or earlier (KnoppMyth R5A30 or earlier):

1. tar cvvpPf /tmp/cache.tar /cache

Now with a nice copy of the directory tree of each partition we will proceed to unmount the file systems and repartition. Make sure your cache partition is hda3 and myth is hda4 as mine are or substitute as required.

(if you are sharing /myth via NFS you'll need to issue: # /etc/init.d/nfs-kernel-server stop)

1. umount /myth
2. umount /cache (if using mythtv 0.18 or earlier (KnoppMyth R5A30 or earlier))

(substitute jfs for xfs if the jfs file system is your preference)

1. mkfs.xfs -f /dev/hda4 (if using mythtv 0.18 or earlier (KnoppMyth R5A30 or earlier))
2. mkfs.xfs -f /dev/hda3

You now need to edit your /etc/fstab to tell mount to use your new filesystem type for mounting the /myth partition

1. nano /etc/fstab

Find the line with /myth in it (6th down) and change ext3 to auto. Now remount your file systems and replace the files.

1. mount /myth
2. mount /cache (if using mythtv 0.18 or earlier (KnoppMyth R5A30 or earlier))
3. cd /
4. tar xvf /tmp/cache.tar
5. tar xvf /tmp/myth.tar

Now with the file systems reconstructed you can restart the back/frontend and enjoy!

1. /etc/init.d/mythtv-backend start

$ mythfrontend &

If all went well you can delete the tar file

1. rm /tmp/myth.tar

When using 5A16 on a system that encompasses the front and backends in one unit, I had to stop GDM first:

1. /etc/init.d/gdm stop (of course, in R5F27 and up GDM is gone so use # pkill xinit)
2. /etc/init.s/nfs-kernel-server stop

Then stop the backend:

1. /etc/init.d/mythtv-backend stop

After following the instructions above, restart the backend:

1. /etc/init.d/mythtv-backend start

Then restart the GDM:

1. /etc/init.d/gdm start
